Registration ends: Jan 27 Registration has closed on Jan 19th due to a long waiting list.

We will visit the Kum Bak Yeon workshop to learn about the unique method of gold leaf imprinting on silk by doing a small project of our choosing. Geumbakjang (금박연) is gold leaf imprinting and is recognized as Korea’s Important Intangible Cultural Heritage, No. 119.   As we work on our project and learn the techniques to apply gold to silk, we will learn about the history of gold leaf decoration, the significance and symbolism of the gold and the icons on royal clothing.

The workshop is located in a traditional hanok in the Bukchon Hanok Village and run by a family whose experience in kumbakyeon goes back five generations.

The history of the Kim family is equally interesting.  Joseon records document ancestral family members as gold leaf decorators for the royal family beginning in King Cheoljong’s reign (1849-1863).  In 2017 the fourth generation Kim Deokhwan is the holder of the important intangible cultural asset for gold leaf decoration.  The fifth generation, Giho Kim and his wife, now operate Kum Bak Yeon with the father’s involvement.
